New year, new paint…

On a quiet trip round Homebase I noticed how easy modern paints are supposed to make our lives. One Coat, No Preparation, Perfect Finish….
If only.

My workmen disagree. They’ll happily tell you – in great details – how long it takes to sand down a wall, fill the holes, fix the woodwork, prime the surface, mix the paint, clean the brushes ….. I find it best to make them a cup of tea and come back later.

But it’s true that there’s no substitute for the old-school attitude. No matter what the paint is, you can see the difference at a glance. More important, for exteriors, good paintwork keeps the elements at bay and can save  a fortune in damage from damp.

So, with the new year getting underway, it’s a good time to get our workmen where they belong – up their ladders.
