Opera Londres Gallery, New Bond Street

Some jobs come with a little extra pressure. When the walls you’re painting will soon be hung with modern masters, every edge, every surface and every finish has to be right. So we were delighted to have recently completed a redecoration of Opera Gallery’s London space at 65–66 New Bond Street, working to a new gallery design by the acclaimed exhibition designer Cécile Degos.

Opera Gallery

Image 1 of 15

A gallery with a global outlook

Opera Gallery was founded in 1994 and has grown into one of the leading international dealers in modern and contemporary art, with sixteen galleries in cities from New York and Paris to Hong Kong, Singapore and Dubai. Its programme brings emerging artists together with established names, and over the years it has handled important work by artists including Picasso, Chagall, Soulages and Calder.

The London gallery is a real Mayfair landmark. Opera Gallery opened its home at 65–66 New Bond Street in late 2023, moving from its original Bond Street address into a space of over 500 square metres spread across three floors, with an adjoining courtyard for large-scale sculpture. It’s a beautiful building, and a privilege to work in.

The designer: Cécile Degos

Cécile Degos is one of the most respected names in exhibition design. Trained at the École nationale supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, she began her career in theatre and opera set design before turning to museums and galleries. She has since designed exhibitions for institutions such as the Musée d’Orsay, the Museum of Modern Art in Paris and the Guggenheim in New York, and works with leading galleries including Gagosian and Perrotin.

Her work is known for being both rigorous and bold, creating spaces that respect the history of a building while letting the art speak for itself. She has also spoken of her love of colour, and that confidence shows in the scheme she created for Opera Gallery.

Our part

Gallery walls are among the most demanding surfaces we work on. Lighting is bright and carefully angled, so any flaw in preparation shows up straight away. As always, our team started with thorough preparation: filling, sanding, and finished with several coats of subtly matching Heritage©️ Colours in several shades of muted greens to give Cécile’s design the flawless finish it deserved.

It was a pleasure to work with Opera Gallery and to help bring Cécile Degos’s vision to life. If you’re passing along New Bond Street, do step inside and see the art in its new setting.

Signature project:
One Lombard Street Brasserie

1 Lombard Street Commercial DecoratingWe recently completed the commercial painting and decorating project for a full refurbishment of the famous 1 Lombard Street, the Square Mile's most established restaurant and arguably it's best placed.

The restaurant is sited in pole position next to Mansion House, the official residence of the Lord Mayor of the City of London, and directly opposite the Bank of England.

Housed in a former Grade II-listed bank, it was opened in 1998 by former banker Soren Jessen and comprises a 1776 restaurant, Brasserie, Bar, Private Dining and Events rooms.

1 Lombard Street is where the City meets for breakfast, lunch and dinner, launches new businesses, signs deals and celebrates profits. And it's even where the City gets married.

We were called in to undertake this large project which we, as professional commercial decorators, were able to complete on time and to a very high standard.

The Royal Horticultural Halls

royal horticultural halls

A recent signature commercial decorating project we completed is the refurbishment of Lindley Hall in Westminster. The classic Edwardian building is owned by the Royal Horticultural Society and used for a wide range of events.

Dating back to 1904, the Hall is an echo of Britain at its finest. King Edward VII wanted the Royal Horticultural Society to have its own purpose-built exhibition space.

The hall was designed by Edwin J Stebbs. He chose red brick with stone dressings and banding, with Arts and Crafts features and Renaissance details. Stebbs wanted to achieve as much natural light as possible and the glass roof has stood the test of time well. Now, with a sliding shutter mechanism open the hall is flooded with light but also offers the alternative of a full blackout.

Besides a wide range of public and private events including conferences, exhibitions, fashion shows, banquets, weddings, and product launches the hall also provides a stunning backdrop for music videos, car launches, adverts and films.

We were contracted to completely repaint the hall to very exacting standards and finished the job successfully against a tight deadline.

"Throughout my dealings with your company I found you to be professional at all stages from initial enquiries, quoting for the work which was competitive, and the final delivery of the project.
I was very happy with the standard of work that was achieved, the pre-planning and the working practices evident when on site."
